"A doctor who was on board the plane, Flight COA61, pronounced the pilot dead in the air. His body was taken out of the cockpit and moved to the crew rest area.

However, passengers didn't learn of their pilot's death until after the plane landed. Some said they knew something was wrong when the crew asked over the intercom whether there was a doctor on board.

The flight's first officer took the controls and he was joined by a colleague who had been on the plane as an additional relief pilot.

A Continental spokesman said the flight "continued safely with two pilots at the controls", adding that the pair were "perfectly qualified" to do so.

The flight took off from Brussels just before 10am local time and touched down at Newark at around noon, as scheduled.

US aviation officials were warned of the emergency at 10.30am local time, half an hour before the plane reached Canada.

The plane's crew declared an emergency and was given priority landing.

It is not the first time pilots have died mid-flight. In January 2007, a Continental flight from Texas to Mexico made an emergency landing after the pilot fell ill and died after his co-pilot landed the plane safely at a nearby Texan airport.

In May 2000, a flight of the Taiwanese airline China Airlines was forced to turn back shortly after take off when the pilot suffered a heart attack. The co-pilot returned the plane to the airport and the pilot died shortly after arriving at a hospital.

In March 1997, a Gulf Air Airbus A-320 skidded at Abu Dhabi airport after a pilot had a heart attack during take-off."
