Let's talk English again

If you like reading books, especially English books, this section of this blog is for you. Today, I would like to share one book that I think is worth reading: Gangsta Granny written by David Walliams. It is a story of a young man, Ben, who thought that his grandmother's life was boring, but when he found out that she was hiding priceless jewelry inside her house, everything changed. Here is a part of the book read by the author himself in the audio file. You can also watch him acting in the youtube link below.

Time 7:01pm
---
Ben’s eyes darted towards the window. For a brief moment, he saw a dark figure wearing a strange hat peer through the dirty glass, then quickly disappear out of view.
“There was a man peering in at the window,” said Ben breathlessly.
“I know,” said Granny. “I told you not to look.”
“Shall I go out and see who it was?” said Ben, trying to hide the fact that he was more than a little frightened. Really, he wanted Granny to go out and see who it was.
“I bet you it was my nosy neighbor, Mr. Parker. He’s a retired Major, and now he runs the neighborhood Watch scheme.
“What’s neighborhood watch?” Asked Ben.
“It’s a group of local people who keep an eye out for burglars. But Mr. Parker just uses it as an excuse to spy on everyone. The nosy old git. I often come back from the supermarket with my bag of cabbages and see he’s hiding behind his net curtains spying on me with a pair of binoculars.”
“Is he suspicious about you?”
“Oh, he’s suspicious about everyone. We have to keep an eye out for him, young lad. The man is a menace.”
Ben went over to the window and peered out. He couldn’t see anyone.”
BRING!!!!!
Ben’s heart nearly missed a beat. It was only the doorbell but if they let Mr. Parker inside he would see all the evidence the police would need to send Ben and his Granny straight to prison.
“Don’t answer it,” said Ben as he ran to the middle of the room and started stuffing all the jewels back in the tin as quickly as he could.
“What do you mean don’t answer it? He knows I’m at home. He just saw us through the window. You answer the door and I will hide the jewels.”
“Me?”
“Yes, you! Hurry!”
BRING!!!
This ring was more insistent. Mr. Parker had left his finger on the buzzer for even longer. Ben took a deep breath and walked calmly through the hall to the front door. He opened it.
“Y-yes?” said Ben in a squeaky high voice.
“C-c-can I help you?”
Mr. Parker put his foot inside the bungalow so the front door couldn’t be closed on him.
“Who are you?” He barked nasally.
He had a very big nose, which made him seem even nosier than he was, and he already seemed extremely nosy. Because he had a big nose, he also had a very nasal voice which made everything he said, how ever serious, seem a little bit absurd, but his eyes shone red like a demon.
“I’m um, I’m um Granny’s friend,” spluttered Ben.
“Why did I say that?” he thought. In truth, he was in a terrible panic and his tongue was running away with him.
“Friend?” Snarled Mr. Parker pushing open the front door. He was stronger than Ben and soon forced his way inside.
“I mean, I mean grandson, Mr. Parker sir,” said Ben retreating back towards the living room.
“Why are you lying to me?” he said. Taking several paces forward as Ben took several paces back. It was as if they were dancing the tango.
“I’m not lying!” cried Ben. They reached the living room door. “You can’t go in there!” yelled Ben thinking of the jewels still scattered all over the carpet.
“Why not?”
“Um, um, um because Granny is doing her naked yoga.”

Ben needed a dramatic excuse to stop Mr. Parker barging through the door and seeing the jewels. He was pretty sure he’d hit the jackpot as Mr. Parker paused and furrowed his brow. Sadly, the nosy neighbor was not convinced.

“Naked yoga a likely story. I need to talk to your grandmother right away. Now, get out of my way, you nasty little worm of a boy,” he said as he shoved the boy aside and opened the living room door.
Granny must have heard Ben through the door because when Mr. Parker burst into the room she was standing in her bra and knickers in tree pose.
“Mr. Parker, do you mind?” said Granny in mock horror that he had seen her in a state of undress.

Thanks for the tip !
I ordered it, I trust you and as you take some time to recommend a book, the least I can do is to give it a shot.

I work and speak english all day long, I mostly watch US TV shows, but I don't have any english books to promote...sorry...except Stephen King and G.R.R Martin (Game of Thrones)...

Je suis désolé d'être un rabat joie... mais....

"Lets speak English again"
This is the correct and commonly used phrase when asking if someone knows how to communicate in English.
It focuses on language ability or fluency.
Example: "Excuse me, do you speak English?"

"Lets talk English again"
This phrase is grammatically incorrect in standard English.
"Talk" usually requires a preposition or specific context (e.g., "talk in English," "talk about something").
Example (corrected): "Do you talk in English with your friends?"

Key Difference:
"Speak" refers to language proficiency or the ability to use a language.
"Talk" is about the act of having a conversation or communicating in a language.

So, "lets speak English" is the standard and correct way to say it.

So, let us focus on the book rather than something else that, in my opinion, may not be useful ever. When you read any part of the book, come forward and let us know what did you learn. We will be happy to read your thoughts and challenge that.

It is free to download, but if you wish to buy it, that is the best. I am looking forward to hearing from you and what you will tell us about the book when you read it!

Nah, no digital support for me. I need to feel the paper, to turn the pages. I am old school, a book has to rest on my bedside table :)
What do you mean by saying"no digital support for me"? This is a book that you can read on your favorite device and by doing so, you might save trees. Or you can print it if that how you read in your spare time

Let us focus on the first seven chapters of the book only. Choose and read one, and then tell us the gist. Yes?:)

Chapter 1 - Cabbagy Water
Chapter 2 - A Duck Quacking
Chapter 3 - Plumbing Weekly

Chapter 4 - Mystery and Wonder
Chapter 5 - A Little Broken
Chapter 6 - Cold Wet Egg

Chapter 7 - Bags of Manure

:D

It is either written in the King’s English or it is gibberish....

save trees??
Trees are an inexhaustible and renewable source of energy; you just need to plant a tree every time you cut one down.
Don't save trees, manage them.

Anyway, whatever, let's stick to the topic : thanks for sharing what looks like a good book :)
Thanks for the positive energy!

The book I chose is just an example for creating a topic or something to talk about in English because that what many people are doing in similar blogs elsewhere in the net. If you think that the book isn't an interesting selection, we could talk about another book you may want to tell us about as long as it is downloadable and available to everyone.

Not only you have difficulties in expressing yourself in proper English, it seems as though you also have difficulties in understanding what you read :D
Please point out where I mentioned that I was an avid reader...

Don't take it personally, I appreciate your efforts
If I seem to you that I do not express myself properly in English, that does not concern you. One little thing you should do instead, read the topic carefully and write something about it. And make sure do not use French.

Come on...you're nitpicking...proper English nowadays is not important as long as people understands what you mean. Just appreciate the efforts and be kind when you correct details, it's an exchange, not a competition :)

Peace out ☮️

Of course, your proficiency in English isn’t a concern for me. I was merely pointing out a few things to help you improve your English skills. My intention was never to be disrespectful, only constructively critical.
Rest assured, if I choose to write in English, the entire text will be in English — the same applies to French, Arabic, or Spanish.

Sometimes we presume intentions, critics may look like "arrogant" even with a good intention. Your English skill is great and I am glad to read your points.

Your English writing was bad but now worse and unclear. You're talking in all directions and many sentences are not related. If I were you, I would spend at least 5 hours a day to improve the English writing skills you have.

Please, it's only a misunderstanding. He meant well, you did too, let's prove we can have a peaceful topic and all benefit from each other skills.

Well sunshine, I guess I am going to have to ask for a refund of all my years studying working and living in the UK.. I think I will also renounce my UK citizenship... Anything to satisfy you.... Would that satisfy you?

I thought you are someone with vast knowledge and good manner, but I was wrong. You bark and bark and bark like a filthy dog talking in all directions yet not making any sense. You claimed that you are an editor and eagerly wanted to correct my writing but not for once you were able to post a paragraph with a complete thought and better punctuation. Now and once again, you are talking in all directions: you are talking about UK and perhaps in next reply, you will talk about Japan, and in next one, you may talk about something else. Are you well!! Seriously. Because if not, you must get yourself checked by a psychiatrist right away, and because I cannot help you in this forum.

So, next time when you wish to write, kindly make sense to what you are talking about, be concise, and most importantly understand the subject before posting.

Yes Sir, I will do that next time.... As I hope you know, there are various types of editors the most common ones are :
  • Copy Editor: Focuses on grammar, style, and consistency.
  • Content Editor: Works on the overall structure, tone, and clarity of the content.
  • Developmental Editor: Helps shape the content from the beginning, focusing on big-picture aspects like themes and structure.
  • Technical Editor: Ensures accuracy and clarity in technical or specialized content.
  • Managing Editor: Oversees the editorial process and team management.
So which one do I impersonate ?

(You're still better than I am) :desole:

I understand that it is a little annoying when people point out our errors, but it is a great opportunity to learn and improve our mastery of the target language. It is not such a big deal.

1-What do you know about the Thiaroye Massacre?
2-Who did it?
3-When did it happen?
4-How many soldiers were brutally slaughtered in the Thiaroye Massacre?
5-What answers people of Senegal are looking for today?
