Shadows are a side effect of another process (light beams, reflection, stuff like that).
Sometimes events are not the expected outcome of a process or its end. It is a side effect which exists for no purpose.

Why is our blood red? Its redness serves no intrinsic purpose. It is not what biologists call an "adaptation". Our blood is red because it happens to contain iron atoms. The iron in the blood is useful, but its redness is a side effect.

Actually let’s just jump in that rabbit hole.
Colors don’t even exist as such. It’s just a matter of wave length in the light spectrum and how our brains translate them.
